The Associate Director of Institutional Engagement Communications will be a vital member of the Institutional Engagement team, responsible for helping to advance the strategic work of the office by generating compelling and inspirational communications. Working with a committed team of advancement professionals, the Associate Director will be the office’s primary writer and will work closely with colleagues in the President’s Office, the Media Group, and academic departments to produce high quality print and electronic communications materials from inception to delivery.

With an in-depth understanding of RISD’s strategic priorities, the Associate Director will:

Imagine, develop and produce a variety of high quality, innovative and engaging print and electronic written fundraising communications for both internal and external audiences. These materials will result in increased brand awareness and presence; elicit affinities and connections; and mobilize resources/support (create appeal).

Ensure that all materials adhere to the highest editorial standings.

Engage with and interviews other members of the Institutional Engagement team to understand institutional goals and priorities and to create content for funding proposals, stewardship materials and reports, brochures and letters.

Manage and complete additional writing projects from inception to delivery.

Essential Functions/Duties

1. Develop, write and oversee the production of strategic communication materials to serve the needs of Institutional Engagement and as requested by the Vice President and Directors of Institutional Engagement.

2. Compose correspondence and respond to inquiries, issues, requests and designated correspondence on behalf of the President, Vice President and Directors.

3. Provide editorial review of all printed and electronic fundraising materials and communications. Make modifications and suggestions to ensure materials are of highest quality and greatest appeal.
4. Create and recommend key messaging points and incorporate them in fundraising communications.
5. Increase awareness of funding priorities and initiatives through development communications materials: general fundraising materials, campaign materials and brochures, fundraising proposals and appeals, and stewardship reports and materials.

6. Research and draft communications, speeches and remarks that are sensitive to and inclusive of a broad range of diverse audiences.

7. Review and approve recommended solutions for how to best inform donors about the present-day impact of their philanthropy.

8. Serve as primary Institutional Engagement liaison to Media and Communications team in coordination of production and other activities.

Job Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Five to seven years of experience in writing fundraising communications, media relations, communications and/or a related field.

Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with expertise in use of English grammar, punctuation and syntax.

Experience working with designers to produce digital and print materials.

Superlative diplomatic and communication skills, including an ability to work and communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals (individual donors, business leaders, public figures, faculty and staff), within a broad range of cultural environments.

Ability to quickly and effectively gather data through interviews or research.

Proven ability to interact with members of the community representing diverse backgrounds and interests.

Demonstrated expertise in the use of Microsoft Office programs, presentation software, Apple systems and the Google environment.

Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Job Qualifications Preferred

Master’s degree in English preferred.
