Position Description

The Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design, Rhode Island School of Design, invites applications for a full-time faculty appointment, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, to commence fall 2018. Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

TLAD seeks a colleague to enhance and advance the Department’s record of innovation, someone with administrative and leadership experience, committed to playing an active role in supporting innovative art and design education in urban public schools and arts education initiatives throughout Rhode Island, also our work animating and rethinking K-12 and collegiate art and design education nationally and internationally.

Required Qualifications

- Earned Ph.D or Ed.D in Art Education, or related field

- Evidence of a high level of scholarly practice

- Full-time art teaching experience at elementary or secondary level

- College teaching experience

- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity in art and design education

- Command of contemporary theoretical and pedagogical practices in art and design teaching and learning, especially for children and youth.

- Ability to teach and advise graduate students at the Masters’ level in multiple modalities courses, and supervise the development of thesis work

-Familiarity with state standards governing teacher education program approval and teacher licensure

- Ability to work supportively with students, faculty, staff, clinical educators and alumni in the maintenance and development of a professional learning community

-Confident leadership and communication skills, with proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

- Multiple years full-time teaching art or design in an urban public school, with appropriate certification

- Evidence of a high level of creative practice

- Experience with practicum and clinical teaching supervision

- Evidence of involvement in innovative program/curriculum design

- Experience in grant writing and/or grant funded programming

- Experience working in a range of learning sites, i.e., college, school, museum, community

- Evidence of ability to work with colleagues across institutional disciplinary boundaries

- Demonstrated experience in the integration of new media technology in the teaching and learning environment

- Active membership in relevant professional association(s)

Department /RISD Description

TLAD has a history of engagement with schools and community since the foundation of the College in 1878, with classes for public school children and teachers established by 1883. The first undergraduate (1938) and graduate (1958) degrees offered by the School were in art education.

The Department is one of three exclusively graduate departments at RISD. We have 3 full-time faculty, 3 part-time faculty, and an administrative coordinator, supporting 20-24 candidates enrolled in two 1-year graduate degree programs, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and a Master of Arts in Art + Design Education (MA). Both Masters degrees in TLAD are in residence, full-time programs.

In 2017, the Department launched a Certificate in Collegiate Teaching in Art + Design, providing students in all RISD’s graduate programs with curricular and pedagogical foundations for faculty positions in higher education.

TLAD has a longstanding commitment to the professional development of K-12 art teachers and students. Project Open Door, our exemplary college access program for underserved, low-income students attending Rhode Island’s urban public high schools, is now 12 years strong. In the last ten years, we have secured $2 million in external funding for these initiatives.

TLAD provides students with diverse learning opportunities across its degree offerings, service-learning, collegiate teaching courses, and externally funded outreach initiatives. The Department recognizes the transformative nature of art and design education, particularly in the lives of children and youth, and we embrace our role in guiding graduate students as future agents of change. We work with our graduates throughout the job search and maintain contact with our alumni through social media platforms. TLAD alumni work as art educators and advocates in a broad range of contexts, including public and private schools, major museums, non-profits, and artist-led collectives throughout the country and the world.

We have extraordinary resources here at RISD, i.e., studio and liberal arts faculty, Nature Lab, Fleet Library, the RISD Museum, and a cross registration agreement with Brown University. These resources intersect very directly with enduring partnerships with schools, cultural institutions and not-for-profit organizations.

Faculty Responsibilities

Position responsibilities include teaching six courses a year: five courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Master of Arts (MA) in Art + Design Education programs, and currently one undergraduate course; also student advising and the supervision of graduate theses. The faculty member will maintain an active research program/professional practice at local, national, and international levels; play a central role in Departmental program, curriculum, and project development; serve on college committees and contribute to the intellectual vigor of the college and community; work with external partners and funders to support and develop art and design educational programs, with particular emphasis on K-12 and collegiate teaching. In determining rank, the Provost will consider a candidate’s full-time teaching experience, standing in the field, and potential and experience to assume leadership roles both in the department and at the college at large.
